THE PRETENDER
by Gwen Elwood.

Young Roy went to school one day
Deciding to be Mark.
Roy dressed in clothes he knew Mark wears,
And thought he looked real sharp.

He said the things he knows Mark says,
And thought it sounded "cool,"
But no one else could understand--
They thought he was a fool.

But still he kept on trying more
To be this other boy,
But all his friends he came across
Missed him as just Roy.

The day grew long, and Roy grew tired
Of his new disguise.
He missed himself as "Plain old Roy,"
So "Mark" met his demise.

Roy learned his lesson from this day--
Being others can be silly--
And thus abandoned all his plans
To come to school as Billy.

Yes, trying to be someone else
Is not much fun to do--
So if you want to save some time,
Just go on being you.

(And in trying to be someone else
You may just find you miss yourself.)
