It is my birthday today. I am 31. 31 is special. 31 is a prime number.

I still feel young and unevolved. I still often wish, however, that my appearance reflected a bit better the amount of life experience I do have.

I attempted to conceive of some sort of celebration for this event. But I could not wrap my mind around the notion of planning something centered on me. Thus, I resolved to spend an entire week treating myself chronically rather than one day in acute celebration.

So, in the self-indulgent spirit in which I am attempting (truly) to live this entire week, the following is a list of birthday presents I'd like to receive, if from no other person then at least from myself.

• a Newton 2100
• a blue desktop G3 with DVD
• patience
• the ability actually to take the advice I give to others
• clarity
• courage
• freedom
• friends and lovers who help me be free
• faith in something that deserves faith
• to be able to take back the stupid things I said and did
• three brilliant movies
• five brilliant novels
• time I allow myself to spend on the beach
• unconditional love, given and received
• consideration
• good judgment
• common sense
• grace
• more dancing
• perseverance
• warmer weather
• lots of silver linings
• no decrease in hope, idealism or optimism
• worthy standards
• reason
• present to myself, again and always
• rejection of people and things that should be rejected
• justice
• ha!
• a little bit of wisdom
• a lot of laughter
• mind-blowing beauty
• endless creativity
• to stop respecting the opinion of people whom I don't respect
• to let go of any respect for those who do not respect me
• (or who do not treat me with respect and compassion)
• compassion
• integrity
• charitable acts
• active and ongoing appreciation for what I do have
• Or, at least, a Newton 2100.

Good thing that I don't ask for much.
